This past Saturday, June 3, 2017 the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of Rock River at Dixon, Illinois. In the event, over 105 anglers from 8 states, were competing not only for the $9,300.00 in cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2017 Cabela’s King Kat Northern and Southern Championship. This year's Northern Championship will be held September 22 and 23, 2017 at the Cumberland River (Old Hickory Lake), Gallatin, Tennessee. The Southern Championship will be held October 6 and October 7, 2017 at Lake Wateree, Camden, South Carolina. Results for the Top Teams

Temperatures were in the low 90's with sunny skies and wind speeds at 10 – 15mph. The water level was slowly falling and getting closer to normal after a great deal of rain and flooding. Matthew and Seth Stephens of Oregon, Illinois and Jacob Diehl of Dixon, Illinois took first place of the tournament, weighing in at 47.12 pounds and earning $3,500.00, plus an additional $1,020.00 for Big Fish. The team targeted fish in shallow water with the big fish coming out of 1 foot of water. They anchored and stated that the warmer water helped fishing. The team targeted mostly brush using bluegill for bait to land 6 total fish for the day.

Taking second place were Matt Dennison and Tyler Richards, both of Rock Falls, Illinois with a total weight of 38.72 pounds and earned $1,800.00. The team anchored in the Rock Falls area using cut shad for bait in 3 – 10 feet of water. They targeted current seams and ledges to land over 30 fish on Saturday.

Chris Baynes of Mankato, Minnesota and Logan Miller of St. Peter, Minnesota took third place weighing in at 34.70 pounds and earned $1,000.00. The team made the 6 hour trip to fish in the Browntown area. They anchored in 4 – 8 feet of water using cut creek chubs to catch 14 total fish for the event.

In fourth place were Bob Clapper of Rock Falls, Illinois and Ricky Richards of Sterling, Illinois weighing in at 34.14 pounds and earning $700.00. The team fished below the next dam, south of Dixon targeting structure in 5 feet of water. They used cut shad for bait to catch 20 total fish.

Aaron Schrader of Sterling, Illinois and Mark Sanders of Dixon, Illinois took fifth place with a total weight of 32.28 pounds and earned $500.00. The team fished 12 miles north of Dixon, targeting deep water structure in 20 feet of water. They anchored and used cut shad for bait to land 6 total fish for the day.

Sixth place – Bobby Lee and Tom Logsdon, 31.58 pounds, $350.00. Seventh place – Nick Stern and Greg Brown, 30.68 pounds, $250.00. Eighth place – Zach Stanley and Jade Smith, 30.18 pounds, $200.00.
