Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Results for Tennessee River (Wheeler Lake) at Decatur, Alabama
This past Saturday, March 11, 2017 the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of The Tennessee River (Wheeler Lake) at Decatur, Alabama. In the event, over 80 top anglers from 13 different states, were competing not only for the $8,700.00 in cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2017 Cabela’s King Kat Northern and Southern Championship. This year's Northern Championship will be held September 22 and 23, 2017 at the Cumberland River (Old Hickory Lake), Gallatin, Tennessee. The Southern Championship will be held October 6 and October 7, 2017 at Lake Wateree, Camden, South Carolina. Results for the Top Teams
Weather conditions were cloudy with light rain Saturday morning with temperatures in the mid to upper 40's and NE winds at 10 – 15mph. Aaron Churchwell of Aeworth, Georgia and Jake Herman of Kennesaw, Georgia took first place of the tournament, weighing in at 144.70 pounds and earning $3,200.00, plus an additional $500.00 Hotel Bonus. The team fished up river about 14 miles north of Decatur to land 10 fish for the day in deep water. Aaron stated that they anchored in 70+ feet of water using skipjack for bait, saying that the smaller chunks worked best to land the big fish.
Taking second place were Tim Peppers of Dallas, Georgia and Shon McWhorter of Decatur, Alabama with a total weight of 131.06 pounds and earning $1,500.00. The team fished up river, 5 miles north of Decatur, anchoring in 18 – 20 feet of water using skipjack for bait to land 18 total fish for the event. Shon stated that the big chunks of skipjack worked best for them.
Shannon Colley of Beaver, Ohio and Wayne Reed of Summerville, Alabama took third place weighing in at 129.86 pounds and earned $800.00. The team fished about 15 miles down river from Decatur, drifting across flats in 35 feet of water using skipjack for bait to catch 6 fish for the day.
In fourth place were David Shipman and Brooke Wilbanks, both of Corinth, Mississippi weighing in at 119.22 pounds and earning $600.00. The team fished 10 miles south of Decatur, targeting ledges early in the day and moved to brush piles later in 30 feet of water using skipjack for bait to catch 9 total fish for the event. The team gave credit to B'n'M Poles for helping to land their fish.
Kelly Godbolt of Conway, South Carolina and Ron Howard of Eutawville, South Carolina took fifth place weighing in at 109.30 pounds and earning $400.00. The team fished 15 miles south of Decatur in 15 – 25 feet of water using skipjack for bait to land 10 fish for the day.
James and Nathan Maynard and Brian Collier, all from Benton, Kentucky finished in sixth place with a total weight of 106 pounds and earned $300.00, plus an additional $500.00 Hotel Bonus.
Michael Clark and Brian Meares, both of Summerville, Alabama had Big Kat of the tournament, weighing 59.70 pounds and earning a check for $860.00.
The Hotel bonus was from the Decatur-Morgan County CVB office. To be qualified, the teams had to stay at a Decatur-Morgan County Hotel. $500.00 of that bonus went to the winners if they qualified in the event and the other $500.00 went into a drawing with all the other anglers, provided they could show receipt of their stay.
