Team Bodine Wins Second King Kat Tournament in a Row
(Their bag included Big Kat at Grand Rivers, KY.)

Louisville, KY – September 27, 2020 – Catfish anglers from five states traveled to the Tennessee & Cumberland Rivers at Grand Rivers, KY for a King Kat Tournament Trail event presented by Bass Pro Shops Cabela’s. Thirteen teams gathered to test their catfishing skills against other anglers and Mother Nature.

Anglers fishing the September 26, 2020 event were vying for $ 3,185 in cash and prizes, and an opportunity to qualify for the $120,000 Classic Championship to be held October 30 – 31, 2020 on Milford Lake in Milford, KS.

“The day started out with the Kid's Rodeo on Little Lake inside the park,” reported Tournament Director, Tim Fortner. “The rodeo brought out 8 participants with their families. I interviewed the young anglers and was blessed to hear how excited they were about catching a fish.”

The day began somewhat breezy, but by mid-morning became calm. The temperature was in the lower 70's and it was partly cloudy most of the day. The water was calm.

The City of Grand Rivers prepared a special event with live music and catfish dinners for sale, which attracted additional spectators. The event was broadcast live on the King Kat Facebook page.

Results for the Top Catfish Teams

First Place and Big Fish

Wayne and Travis Bodine are on a streak. After winning total weight and Big Kat last week in Jeffersonville, IN, the 2019 Classic winners did it again at Grand Rivers. The team from Bardstown, KY weighed in a bag of 107.66 pounds and once again had Big Kat of the tournament at 41.62 pounds. They earned a check for $1,800. They also won the Driftmaster Bonus.

In reference to winning two in a row, Wayne said, “We are consistent. We began tournament fishing by being consistently bad. Now we are getting consistently better.”

Wayne and Travis fished near the 68/80 Bridge about 6 miles south of the weigh-in site at Little Lake Park. They found the 41.62 pound Big Kat in about 50 feet of water using fresh frozen skipjack that they caught themselves for bait. They plan to be at both Milford, KS King Kat events.

“We sweated a little today,” added Travis referring to hot weather. “But we didn’t do anything special to catch the fish.”

“We appreciate Cabela's for putting up with everything they have had to put up,” concluded Wayne. “I know it’s a struggle to get all of this done.”

“If is a struggle,” added Fortner. “We will just agree to work together and get through everything during this pandemic year.”

Second Place

The runner-up spot went to Daniel Bell from Mr. Orab, OH and Bill Duncan from Ewing, KY. Their 5 fish limit weighed 90.78 pounds and earned them a check for $700.

Duncan said they used both skipjack and shad for bait. Like many catfish anglers they prefer the fresh skipjack because the oil and smell is appealing to the catfish. The team fished below Kentucky Dam in water that ranged from 20 to 60 feet deep.”

“We caught em’ about every way,” said Bell. “We spot-locked, drifted, and bumped to catch about 10 or 11 fish on the day. It is a long drive to Milford, but we will probably be there.”

Third Place

The third spot went to the Catfishing Christians, Jerry, Noah, and Hannah Ishcomer. They made the drive from Jasper, Texas to fish the Grand Rivers event. At the end of the day, they brought 4 fish to the scales that weighed 58.72 pounds. They earned a check for $425.

Noah reported that they fished with fresh skipjack that they caught recently. Hannah added that they definitely prefer fresh to frozen skipjack.

“We fished on the Lower Cumberland River,” reported Hannah. “We stuck to the bends of the river all day dragging planer boards. The water temp was 73 and we were fishing in about 35-45 feet of water.”

“We only caught four fish all day,” continued Hannah. “We just couldn't get that fifth fish! We did lose one big one though.”

They all saw the pole go down and Jerry picked it up. He started to bring in the fish, but the line kept going slack. The fish was swimming upriver towards the boat. As it got closer to the boat, it started to fight and go back downriver. Everyone thought that it was a pretty good size fish, from the way it fought.

“I guess we will never know the exact weight,” conceded Hannah. “I figure it was around 40 pounds. Not a monster, but you still get that funny/sick feeling in your stomach when something like that happens.”

“Noah caught the big fish about 1:00. It’s pretty hard to beat him to the pole when it goes down. I’m gonna’ start tripping him,” joked Jerry. “As far as fishing Milford we don’t know yet. Gotta’ make some catfish money.”

“Overall, the "Catfishing Christians" had a good day on the water,” concluded Hannah. “We had fun, and to top it off, the Lord allowed us to end with a 3rd place finish.”
