Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Results for The Mississippi

This past Saturday, August 19, 2017 the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of the Mississippi River at Quincy, Illinois. In the event over 50 anglers from 6 states, were competing not only for the $5,420.00 in cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2017 Cabela’s King Kat Northern and Southern Championship. This year's Northern Championship will be held September 22 and 23, 2017 at the Cumberland River (Old Hickory Lake), Gallatin, Tennessee. The Southern Championship will be held October 6 and October 7, 2017 at Lake Wateree, Camden, South Carolina. Results for the Top Teams

Tournament day saw sunny skies with temperatures in the high 80's and a SE wind at 5mph. The water was lower than usual with a light current. Joey Heckrodt and Jerry Cox, both of Whitehall, Illinois took first place of the event, weighing in at 72.24 pounds and earning $3,000.00. The team fished on Pool 22 just below the dam at Quincy. They anchored using goldeye for bait to land 6 fish for the day.

Taking second place were Jim Gillenwater of Keokuk, Iowa and R.D. Trout of LeHarpe, Illinois with a total weight of 63.40 pounds and earned $1,500.00. The team fished on Pool 20 up toward Keokuk Dam, drifting all day and using a variety of bait in 30 feet of water to catch 6 total fish. They stated that this was the first year in awhile that there wasn't any current. Jim stated that over the past few years, at this time of year, there had always been a current.

Alex Nagy of Warsaw, Illinois and Brandon Schadt of Bluegrass, Iowa took third place weighing in at 58.46 pounds and earned $500.00. The team also fished in Pool 20 below the Keokuk Dam, bumped baits in various depths of water using mooneye for bait to land 5 total fish for the day.

In fourth place were Chris Souders of Oak Hill, Ohio and Nick Conaway of Lucasville, Ohio weighing in at 55.06 pounds and earning $420.00 for Big Fish of the event. The team fished right in the Quincy area, the same location they fished last year and finished in 2nd place. Chris stated the difference from last year's event was the current. This year there was little to no current. The team anchored in 30 feet of water using skipjack for bait.
